I know I’ve been pretty quiet lately. I’ve had a lot of things on my mind, and thought that these thoughts were best kept to myself until I could muddle through them. I’ve been spending a lot of time “pickin’ em up and puttin’ em down”….picking up beliefs, ideas, things that mean something to me, and putting down the ones that don’t serve me anymore. Let someone else carry them for a while.
During all this introspection, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve reached one of those points in my life where maybe it’s time to let a few things out. I have said many times, and hold almost religiously that my convictions are not for public display. I am who I am, and to quote popeye, that’s all that I am. Maybe, just maybe, people need to know who that is.
I actually thought about posting this for “Heads or Tails Tuesday” with the theme “box”, but I just love Barb and her meme, and I thought maybe this was too….well….just too. So I saved it for today.
I hold certain things very close, one of them being that I do NOT discuss politics. I just don’t. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have an opinion, for as you shall see, I do. It means that I respect others opinions, and know that it’s a very inflammatory subject and choose my battles wisely.
The current state of our country has me extremely concerned. The current political state has me more so. For the first time in my adult life, I am having an extremely hard time deciding on where my vote will be cast. I’m angry, I’m frustrated, I’m confused and concerned. I feel that, as politicians will, I’m being shown what they want me to see, but not WHO they are. The common phrase I’m hearing is that “we (whomever) are what the people are looking for”, we represent the public. I’m part of the public. Are you representing me? Are you in “tune” with my issues? Then I started thinking…maybe I need….for once…to make MY issues…my needs…my thoughts, ideals, mantra’s and creedo’s known. So, here you are. I won’t give a warning. It just is what it is.
I don’t believe our government is here to help us. I believe it is a business, and is run as such … albeit badly. I don’t believe that what is right for one is right for all, and certain decisions should be left to individuals. I do not want to send money to help china, or whomever, with their earthquake or flood relief. I do not want to support programs that provide food and clothing and shelter to other countries. I have seen, and lived, in parts of THIS country, have family who live it EVERY DAY, who have children who go hungry every night because they don’t have enough money to buy food or clothing, because the businesses in their town have been shut down because industry is being sent overseas. There is enough suffering in the United States that could benefit from my donation, don’t tell me where I have to send it. We need to take care of our own. Looking for “change”? Let’s start with a hand up not a hand out. Help those here in need to find jobs, bring industry to the US, let’s support ourselves.
I believe in the inalienable right to bear arms. I also realize that the only use for a handgun or a semi-automatic weapon is to kill another human being. I recognize that there needs to be some control on this issue, and that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”. Yes, I know that there is target practice, shooting contests, etc. But my bottom line remains, the only use of a handgun is to kill another human being. This is a personal choice, but one that needs to be stated clearly. If you own a handgun, you have made the statement that you are willing to take another persons life. I believe in the right to allow “open carry” of a weapon, but realize that although it is a legal action, it’s not always a moral or ethical action. Just because you turn 21 and can drink legally, doesn’t mean you should get drunk every night. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. I will also say that I own a handgun. And should the situation ever arise where some yahoo decides to enter MY home and threaten to hurt MY family, I will kill them. That is my right as well.
I believe that knowledge is power. Reading material should be free to anyone who wants to read it. Do NOT ban my books. If my 11 year old son wants to read mein kampf, then he can. If he wants to read go ask alice, he can. An education is something that cannot be wasted. I don’t believe that requesting Buckland’s complete book of witchcraft from the library because I’m doing an article on the use of essential oils should label me as a subversive, causing wary looks from the librarian every time I visit after that, despite the fact that I also requested the Koran at the same time. If you are seeking “subversive” or “dangerous” reading material, read the bible. There is more murder, lust, intrigue, incest and drunken wantonness in there than in any other book. I know because I read it.
I support our Troops, and applaud them for the hard work and dedication that they are providing. I also realize that this is a futile, and misplaced effort that is costing a lot of unnecessary lives. Perhaps I’m best described as a conscientious objector and before you blast me, realize that our constitution allows me to feel that way. Are their times where confrontation/war is necessary, yes, I believe there are. Is this one of those times, no I don’t think so. Do I support the men and women risking their lives? Absolutely.
I do not believe that a persons sexual affiliation makes them a target for judgement or hatred. What you do in your bedroom with another consenting adult is your business. I believe that GLBT individuals are simply human beings, living their life. I believe that if they desire marriage, they should get married. Unfortunately I think that marriage is more a problem than anything. (hey, it’s personal experience!) If two women want to marry, and they love each other, and are raising children together, I think that is fabulous. If two men want to marry, and raise children together, fabulous. If the children are loved, fed, educated and cared for, what is the problem.
I believe in a womans right to choose whether or not to bear a child. I believe that abortion should be safe and legal, without notification. I do NOT believe that abortion should be used as birth control, and oppose partial birth abortion and find it abhorrent. I believe that a woman who has been raped or sexually abused has the right to terminate the subsequent pregnancy. As a victim of abuse, rape and subsequent preganancy, I am grateful that I was allowed to terminate the pregnancy. Could I have learned to love that child? Perhaps. Would it have been a lifelong torture to look at the child each day knowing the hatred and violence that brought them into the world? yes. And considering that I would have been a single mother with this child, the problems are compounded. Yes, I realize that adoption is always an option, and I am an adopted child myself. What if my mother had aborted me as her family instructed her to? All I can say is that it would have been her choice. I know that she went on to have other children, tried to get her life together, but through many conversations once we found one another, it was something that plagued her all her life, and I believe led her to eventually drink herself to death. Abortion is a personal decision, one that is best left to the individual who will have to live with the results. If you don’t believe in it, don’t have one. But leave me, and my body and beliefs alone.
I do not believe in Genetically modified foods. I do not believe in vaccinating my children. I believe in God, and in truth, and in faith. I believe in Karma. I believe in the inherent good in all mankind. I believe in kindness and honesty. I believe in family and protection and guidance. I believe in health. I believe in challenging the system and reclaiming our rights as human beings. I don’t believe in status quo.
I’m sure that there are folks out there who will disagree with some or all of what I have said. That’s fine. I’ll probaly lose a few readers because I’ve gone and “spilled the beans”. That is certainly your choice. But in closing I’ll say this. America is on the brink of a new age. No matter what the outcome of this election, the status quo will never be the same. Before you vote, please, take the opportunity to review your own personal beliefs and standards. Make your decision based on what you want your childrens lives to hold, not on a party affiliation. Please…take one extra minute of your day and think about what we are doing. There is no going back.
