Aromatherapy and Anxiety

We plan for each day, for our family, for our future. And then, without warning, something comes along that destroys all of our carefully laid plans, leaving us floundering in confusion, distress, and at times fear and depression. There are things going on in our world, even in our own city, that have brought fear and confusion to our very doorstep. These recent tragedies have left many of us reeling with shock and perhaps overrun with emotions. Many adults and children alike are finding it very difficult to resume a “normal” life. Left untended, extreme stress and worry can manifest into many physical and chemical changes, including increased blood pressure, muscle tension, headaches and back pain, and severe intestinal distress. It is important during situations such as these that we take steps to prevent illness on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level in ourselves, and in our loved ones. We need to stop the worry before it takes hold of your emotions and thoughts, developing peace and transformation in our thoughts and actions. Many essential oils and essences can help each of us to find transformation, peace and relaxation during times of extreme stress and discomfort. By utilizing essences that soothe and enhance serenity, we can not only find some reprieve from the madness around us, but also help to reduce the physical symptoms of stress. Anxiety can take many forms, each needing a slightly different approach. For anxiety with muscle tension, essences of Sandalwood, Lavender, Clary Sage and Chamomile are most helpful. For Restless anxiety, where there is sweating, dizziness, or any system overactive, Vetiver, Juniper and Frankincense are very helpful. For Anxiety with apprehension, paranoia or excessive worry, choose Rose, Bergamot or Geranium. For symptoms of repressed anxiety, with unusual irritability, difficulty in concentrating, insomnia or feelings of constant exhaustion, Bergamot, Neroli, Sandalwood and Cedarwood can provide relief. For children, and those who are suffering from Panic attacks or intense fears, try the following blend: To a 2 oz spray bottle, add:
1 3/4 oz distilled water
1/4 oz vodka or witch hazel
10 drops Marjoram
5 drops Sandalwood
3 drops Rose
4 drops Chamomile
Shake well, and spray at the onset of an attack.
Remember to find peace in your family and friends, and take time for relaxation during this very difficult time.
